4. There must be amplification of the sound, by having more than one smooth

surface to bounce it back to you.

1. The Grand Canyon is 4-18 miles wide in various places. 2. The sound bounces off the walls and from one to the other. 3. It is very quiet in the Grand Canyon. 4. There are walls on every side. Hence, the Grand Canyon is a good place to hear echoes.

Since there is a lot of space in a canyon, the sound waves bounce back and forth without being absorbed easily.
