Dark, brown menstruation may be a sign that it is 'old' blood. Sometimes blood stays in the uterus for a few days before your period 'starts'...it could be because it is a light flow or that the cervical opening is very narrow making it difficult for the blood to exit. Light flows and dark blood could also occur because of dehydration.

The blood is more brown tinged toward the end of the period due to the amount of "old" blood being in the mix. The brown is brought on by dead red blood cells and bilirubin content.

There is nothing wrong with brown blood at the end of the menstrual cycle, it is oxidized blood. This means you are nearing the end of they cycle and your body is "cleaning" itself out.

normally the dark blood will appear at the end of your period, because it is the lining that is coming out.

Why do women sometimes have brown stuff in the crotch of their panties?

A brownish discharge is old blood. When blood is coming from the uterus during a period, it begins as pinkish (light bleeding), then redder or maroonish color (heavier bleeding with or without clumps called blood clots). Toward the end of a period, the flow becomes lighter and brownish colored. Brownish means "old blood", e.g. the blood has clotted from the source, like it is supposed to, so now the flow is just whatever blood was already created before. If you cut your finger and put a bandage on it, first you'd see reddish blood, but after the body creates a clot to stop fresh bleeding, you would see brownish blood forming with the scab on the wound. Same principle for what's happening in the uterus, except there is no scabbing when the body stops the active bleeding.

What causes decidual bleeding during pregnancy?

Decidual BleedingOne of the most common causes of period-like bleeding during pregnancy is called decidual bleeding. Sometimes, during pregnancy, your body's hormones can get out of whack, causing you to lose parts of the lining of your uterus. This is especially common in the early stages of pregnancy, before the lining has completely attached to the placenta. While it can be troublesome to think about shedding part if your uterine lining, decidual bleeding is generally not thought to be a health threat to you or your baby. There are a number of other reasons why bleeding during pregnancy may occur. Most of them present little health risk to you and your little one. However, bleeding can sometimes indicate a complication with your pregnancy. If you are pregnant, it is important to be aware of your bleeding. If you experience any abnormal bleeding at any point during your pregnancy, contact your health care provider immediately.
