If you spend any time on a beach, you will be sure to see seagulls dropping oysters and other shellfish on the rocks below them from above to smash them open and eat the critter inside. This would be one cause for all the broken shells on the beach. A second could be the fact that as they are getting rolled around by the tide, the empty shells are hitting rocks and breaking against them, or getting stepped on by beachgoers and shattering (rather painfully) underneath their weight
