There were two battles in the early part of the war - New Madrid and Island No.10 - which liberated the Upper Mississippi and brought temporary credibility to John Pope, before his humiliation at Second Bull Run.

The better-known campaign was by Grant and Sherman, ending in the capture of Vicksburg, which completed the liberation of the Mississippi, but this could not be described as the 'northern part of the river'.
