In a Teardrop attack, the attacker floods the target machine with packets that either lack sound order or self-coherence, or have content designed to confuse computers, routers, firewalls or some service present on the network. This may include sending fragments with overlapping, over-sized payloads to the target machine. Depending on how the system is set up, this can crash the operating system for the computer or crash an application due to a bug in the TCP/IP fragmentation reassemply code. Several older Windows operating systems are quite vulnerable to these attacks as are some olver versions of Linux. The attacker may use this method to degrade services, completely shut down a network, or as a probing tool to watch how the system administrator responds when different devices are crashed or to see what services appear during restoration of services.
