They were called sea monkeys. They were actually brine shrimp eggs you added to salty water. There are small toys made from Polyacrylamide a water absorbing polymer which is very similar to the material used in diapers. Very different from sea monkeys.

∙ 15y agoThe expanding animal-shaped toys are sold under a lot of different names, and don't seem to have a typical generic name, but a few science-experiment sites call them "grow creatures."
They are made of a hydrophilic ("water-loving") polymer called a hydrogel, similar to the absorbent chemical in modern disposable diapers. The hydrogel is combined with another polymer which is hydrophobic (not rabid, just "water-hating"), which causes the animal to hold its shape as it grows, and which helps it maintain its shape as it shrinks if removed from water.

you can conduct the experiment but it will not prove anything because you will not have anything to compare it to. For example, if you soak a potato in salt water and it grows in size, how would you know if it was the water or the salt that made it grow? You would have to soak a potato in plain water and one in salt water to see what happens.
