There are many advantages to using things other than books from your local library.
DVDS: Free DVD rental. If you don't like it, you don't have to feel guilty for not watching it.
Audio books: Great for car trips, commuting, etc. Audio books can be expensive, and often people do not like to listen to them more than once. Another plus for libraries!
CDS: You can try a variety of music, that you would not likely buy in case you didn't like it. Still free.
Magazines: Read for free without a subscription. If you just want the one article, head to your library.
E-books and Downloadable audio books: No worries about late fees, most often they expire automatically!
Other items: Many libraries offer computer software, puzzles, Video Games, and other things for checkout. Still free.
There are a few disadvantages to using your library, but they can easily be averted.
- Electronic materials may not work, but if you tell your librarian, they will often be able to fix it, or order a new copy.
- You will often be charged larger late fees for multimedia items such as these. Solution? Keep track of your due dates and return your items!
- You can only keep the item for a limited amount of time, but you can often renew them, and sometimes keep items for up to 9 weeks depending on your library.
- If you are doing research, sometimes you are not able to cite electronic sources.
