Similarities:

  1. Both are imaginary lines drawn on maps.
  2. Both make rings around the globe.
Differences:
  1. Lines of latitude run east-west while lines of longitude run north-south.
  2. The maximum degree of latitude is 90 in each hemisphere while the maximum degree of longitude is 180 in each hemisphere.
  3. Lines of latitude run parallel to each other while lines of longitude converge at the poles.
  4. Lines of longitude are of equal length while lines of longitude decrease in length as they move towards the poles.
  5. Lines of latitude can be used to measure the climate of regions while lines of longitude can be used to calculate time from the time zones.

Latitude and longitude is a system for defining your position on a surface. Most particularly on the surface of the earth. To do this you use this system of coordinates.

Because you are defining a position on a two dimensional surface, two base, or reference lines are required.

The two references are both equivalent to zero degrees and referred to as up, down and left, right.

The two lines of zero chosen are called the equator (up, down) and the prime meridian (left right). Up, down is latitude also called north (up) and south (down). Left, right is called longitude also called east (right) and west (left)

So to define your position you would say you are x degrees north or south (up, down) and y degrees east or west (left, right)

Where these two coordinates meet is your position.

Latitude of a place is the measure of how far north or south it is from the equator.

Longitude of a place is the measure of how far east or west it is from a line on the earth

that's accepted as the starting line.

Since these measurements are on the curved surface of a sphere, they're measured in angles.

Every latitude is between zero and 90 degrees, along with 'north' or 'south' to tell which direction

it's measured from the equator. Every longitude is between zero and 180 degrees, along with

'east' or 'west' to tell which direction it's measured from the starting line.

With those two numbers, you can describe the location of every point on earth.
