Pay for Head Start teachers varies depending on where you teach. In some areas, the wage can be over $10.00 an hour. but in some it can be a lot less than that. You do not get paid over the summer, but it might be possible to get unemployment in some areas. Pay and benefits depend on the individual Head Start programs, but in most cases Head Start pay does not come close to what regular teachers earn and the expectations are just as high.

Head Start teacher today what challenges would you face?

There are many challenges head start teachers need to face. there is very little respect given to a head start teacher. People assume that when you work with low income families and single parents you are in the same bracket. If I tell someone I work with the head start family the first thing they ask is why? the challenges also come the families themselves. They seem to think that pcking their children up by 6 p.m. is just a request not an obligation. There is never a way around to punish these parentd because they do not have money for late fees. If or when a parent does respect respect you it usually comes with the innate desire to be your best friend. Paents do not realize that time spent with there child as a job, not a basis for frindship or free after hours childcare. Parents are drug dependant or tied into gangs or even in trouble with the law.
