The officially inhabited lands of the world currently use 41 different time offsets. Five of them are used during only part of each year, but at least 38 are in use at any given time. So if you ask for the exact time on Earth, you should get at least 38 different answers.

I refer to clock settings as time offsets because a time zone is often expressed as an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). For example, Mountain Standard Time in North America is UTC - 7 hours, or UTC-7.

Several time zones can have the same time offset, or a time zone can have several different names, depending on how you look at it.

Most of the time zones in North America, Europe and Africa are named after the part of the continent where they are. Those names are shared by multiple countries. Most of the time zones in South America and Asia are named after the countries where they are used. Altogether the 41 time offsets or zones have 167 different names, including 34 that are used only for Daylight Saving Time or Summer Time.
