The peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of the nerves that carry impulses to and from the central nervous system. The 2 subcategories here are somatic nervous system (SNS) and autonomic nervous system (ANS). The SNS carries sensations and also controls those muscles which can be willed to move (with some exceptions). The ANS controls internal organs and glandular secretions (again, with some exceptions).
