Peoples houses and infrastructure can be damaged. For example an eruption of mount etna in 1928 destroyed the village of Mascali with the lava destroying nearly every building. This can leave people homeless.

Crops are ruined which can cause famine and poverty

People can die or get injured from the gases given off, their houses collapsing or get caught in a pyroclastic flow. For example in September 1979, Mount Etna suddenly erupted, sending lava and rocks onto a hiking trail where a tour group was walking. Six people were killed and another 40 injured by the unexpected event.

Since 1500 BC, more than 150 incidents of lava eruptions have been recorded, and a countless number of smaller eruptions regularly occur at the summit.
