The South Pole lies at 90 degrees South Latitude. Vostok Research Station is located at 78°27′51.92″S 106°50′14.38″E, about 1,300 km from the Geographic South Pole.

The 'centre of Antarctica' lies somewhere in between these two named areas, but has not specifically been identified, since the size of the Antarctic continent changes based on the seasonal formation and melting of sea ice around the continent.

The Antarctic continent sits like a "cap" over the south pole.

-- Every latitude south of about 60°S crosses some part of Antarctica,

and every latitude south of about 85.5°S is completely on it.

-- Since all longitudes converge (come together) at the south pole,

every longitude traverses part of Antarctica.
