An active volcano is erupting or has erupted recently. An extinct volcano will never erupt again. A dormant volcano was not erupting recently but may erupt in the future. You could call it "sleeping".

  1. Shield Volcano - A shield volcano is given its name due to the fact that they develope a very broad shield like appearance. Their style of eruption is often times consiting of docile lawa flows, however some have been known to erupt explosively in the past. The type of magma involved in the creation of this type of volcano is Basalt, as it is very fluid and can let gasses escape with relative ease ( making explosive eruptions unlikely). An example of this type of volcano would b Mauna Loa on the big island of Hawaii.
  2. Stratovolcanoes - This type of volcano is seen world wide and is often times made up of mixtures of different types of magma. The range can be from episodes of Rhyolite, Andesite, as well as the occasional basalt injection. The eruption style tends to be explosive as both Rhyolite and Andesite are rather sticky and dont flow well. This high viscosity allows for the build up of gasses to explosive levels within the magma chamber. Once the chamber is breached the pressure drops rapidly allowing for explosive decompression from the magma chamber. An example and probably most well known U.S. volcano of this type is Mt. St. Helens of the Cascade Volcanic Arc in Washington state.
  3. Caldera - These types of volcanoes are rather rare, and often times erupt extremely infrequently. These are almost always composed to Rhyolite or Rhyo-Dacite. These types of magma are the most viscous allowing for much higher pressures to build up deep within a magma chamber before eruption. The higher pressure will often times lead to highly explosive eruptions on the scale of the volcano explosivity index. Caldera types however can also have lava effusion, or the hawaiian style of bubbling and oozing lava out of vents. There are several major examples of this type of volcano world wide. The one that has probably been most studied is the Yellowstone Super Caldera, often times referred to as a Super Volcano. Another example of this type of volcano is the Long Valley Caldera in California near Mammoth Mountain.
