There are numerous types of valves. Each has a specific function and usage and differs from the others. From seismic , to pressure they can be specialized or simple in function. A valves purpose is to allow, stop, or reduce flow of a substance thru a pipe. Most common valves on homes would be gate and ball valves. Many kinds of designs in gate valves, if you look at the name (gate) it works simply like a gate but most don't swing, they slide. Gate valves have their pluses and many minuses. One of the minuses is that most gate valves you can buy at a store are very poorly designed and the reason why so many people buy them is because they are usually cheaper. When you close a old gate valve you will most likely have the problem of no shutting off all the way, so you go and crank more on the gate valve and then when you need to turn it on? (which has happened to me ALOT!) the gate valve threads strip out and your only options are replacing the valve or leaving the valve off (which most costumers don't like) I always tell people if they want to save money down the road, please buy ball valves. Most ball valves are full way valves and they also protect them selves from debris that's flowing threw them. If you have a gate valve that is stripped out and you need the water back on asap, then you can unscrew the gate valve body and take a pair of pliers and pull out the gate and then put the body back on the valve but of course you will need to replace it.
