A struggle between Rome and Carthage for dominance of the Western Mediterranean, initially precipitated by a dispute over Sicily.

The First Punic War was caused by Roman security concerns. They were worried that the Carthaginians would expand from their ports in western Sicily into eastern Sicily, just two miles from the mainland, which was Roman territory.

The second Punic War was provoked by the Carthaginian general Hannibal out of a desire for revenge for the First Punic War.

The Third Punic War was caused by Rome wanting to destroy Carthage. Carthage was demilitarised under the terms of the peace treaty. After finishing paying their 50 year war indemnity, the Carthaginians considered themselves free form the treaty and raised an army for defence against raids by the neighbouring Kingdom of Numidia. The Romans were concerned about a possible resurgence of Carthaginian military power. They were also worried about Carthage's renewed prosperity. This had been due to not having to incur military expenses.
