On September 11, 2001, disaster struck America! Four planes were hijacked by 19 men that are said to be members of AL Qaeda, known as a terrorist extremist group, led by Osama bin Laden. Two of these planes hit the World Trade Centre (WTC) in the morning, piloted by Muhammad Atta and Marwan al Shehhi. Soon after, a third plane struck into the western side of The Pentagon, flown by Hani Hanjour. About 20 minutes after, the fourth plane was crashed by Ziad Jarrah due to passengers trying to breach the cockpit and gain control of the plane. Around 3000 people died due to the attacks.

There are many different theories as to why 9/11 happened. George Bush claim that the attackers hate America as they are 'the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world'. Others may say this is due to a clash of civilisations. Although I'm sure these are minor contributing factors, they are definitely not the main causes. Rather we shall be looking at some other causes, which played a larger role, such as America's foreign policy.

The causes of 9/11 can be traced back to the time during the Cold war, when Osama Bin Laden was an ally of the west. The CIA recruited Bin Laden in 1979 and trained him in guerrilla warfare. It was at this time that Osama Bin Laden was able to recruit many other mujahedeen fighters who were willing to fight against the Soviet Union who invaded Afghanistan. Osama recruited about 4000 volunteers from his own country. Bin Laden and these others were viewed as freedom fighters by the west, which was supporting them in many ways at the time, including financially. Those same freedom fighters are now called Islamic terrorists.

While fighting the soviets, Bin Laden's ideology, goals and the role of jihad started to develop at that time, along with the forming of Al Qaeda. Osama developed close relations with many radical leaders, such as Ayman Al Zawahiri who is the current leader of Al Qaeda. These events way back in the 70's contributed to the rise of Al Qaeda and some of the extremist ideology that played a role in the 9/11 attacks.

One of the main causes of 9/11 that Osama Bin Laden mentions himself is the Palestinian Israeli Conflict. For centuries there was no conflict in Palestine. There was approximately 86 percent Muslim, 10 percent Christian and 4 percent Jews. In the late 1800's a group of Jews settled in Palestine. Soon after, more and more Jews settled there, aiming to create a Jewish homeland. Eventually, fighting broke out and the Zionist illegal settlers (the Jews) took more and more of the Palestinian land leaving the Palestinians with few resources and little land.

Osama Bin Laden and many others were upset about the violence and cruelty to the Palestinians. Bin Laden released an audio message on the internet dealing primarily with Israel and the Palestinians on the 60th anniversary of Israel. He said, "We swore that America won't live in security until we live it truly in Palestine. America won't get out of this crisis until it gets out of the Arabian Peninsula and stops the support of Israel." In another statement, Bin laden says that he is striking the Americans because of the injustice of the Islamic world especially in Iraq and Palestine (February 14, 2003). Bin laden is angry at the fact that Palestinians are getting tortured and killed and that when they fight back, the blame goes to them. The Jews have no right to take over Palestine and call it Israel. It is called Palestine, not Israel, and it never really will be. Palestine belongs to the Palestinians. If the Jews had just settled in Palestine and not tried taking it over, they would have been allowed, as they were at the beginning. However, they did not, and wanted Palestine (not Israel) for their own.

America and Britain are allies of the Jews and do not stop them illegally stealing land, despite knowing how cruel they are. America just wants power and because the Jews have a lot of power and own a lot of things such as Ralph Lauren, Westfield and founded Google. They also have a lot of power in the white house.

Our last point is the First Gulf War. Sadam Husain was an ally to America and fought the Iran-Iraq war with them. Husain wanted to invade Kuwait as he thought he deserved it and asked America about this. To this, Bush sends an ambassador (April Glaspie, I think) to Sadam telling him that he America have no opinion on your 'Arab-Arab' conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Therefore, Sadam sees America has no clear objection and invades Kuwait. Bush then stabs Sadam in the back, which causes The First Gulf War, leading to American troops on Saudi soil. Many people were angered by this, such as Osama Bin Laden, who was an ally of America and a CIA agent working with them. Bin Laden believed that the US foreign policy has oppressed and killed/harmed Muslims in the Middle East, which was a main reason 9/11, happened.

In conclusion we think that, even though America are in the wrong and are being greedy and cruel, we think that 9/11 was extreme and no one has the right to take a life of an innocent person, let alone 3000. 9/11 was a terrorist attack that should never have happened, no matter what the case.
