Both programs have similar ways of capturing and showing information.

Family Tree Maker allows you to provide sources and a rating system for media, as well as track DNA profiles and medical problems. It is also integrated with online databases and allows you to capture information from most websites.

Rootsmagic has the ability to print books without outside software, forms and wall charts.

Both programs are rated about the same by users. It would be mostly a matter of which one you are more comfortable with.
