In the broadest sense, culture is the entire way of life of a group of people. It consists of:

  • Clothing, dress, style, and standards of beauty
  • Foods
  • Language, signs, and other forms of communication
  • Rituals, customs, and traditions
  • Values, norms, and sanctions
  • Tools, technology, and artifacts
  • Music
  • Philosophies, ideologies, and lifeways

Culture is primarily divided into two major components: 1) the material or physical aspects of culture, and 2) the immaterial or symbolic aspects of culture. The two influence each other in diverse ways.

Culture is so well internalized that it appears to be "second nature" or "inherent" but all aspects of culture are socially constructed, that is, negotiated by and between individuals in the context of communities and societies as well as the time period. Culture is not static, but in a constant state of flux, with change occuring at different rates depending upon the aspect of culture observed.
