During the US Civil War, there were several Union generals in charge of the Union's war efforts in the East. They were:* George B. McClellan;* Henry Halleck;* Ambrose Burnside;* John Pope;* George Meade; and* US Grant.
The Battle of Chantilly was the battle that took the lives of two Union generals. Generals Issac Stephens and Philip Kearny were killed on September 1, 1862.
During the course of the US Civil War, two Confederate generals who were killed in action were generals Sidney Johnston and Stonewall Jackson.Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 and Stonewall Jackson was killed during the Battle of Chancellorsville. On the Northern side, generals were also lost in battle, however, most historians believe that none of them were crucial figures in the Union's war efforts.
As the US Civil War unfolded, the US army was small and did not have many generals. In order to command all the Union recruits, new generals had to be appointed. In 1861, Lincoln appointed one hundred and twenty six generals.
