During the Renaissance Florentine painters (and critics) were of the opinion that the beautiful line was the essential basis for good art. In Venice they meant that color was the starting point of good art.

Sienese painting is more conservative than Florentine. It's inclined more towards the decorative beautification effect and elegant grace of late Gothic art. Look at Duccio. Florentine painting is influenced by the naturalistic style developed in the 14th century. Look at Michelangelo.
