At the Munich Conference in September 1938, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Germany negotiated the German annexation of the Sudetenland, a German speaking region that was then part of Czechoslovakia. The latter was not invited to the conference despite the discussions about its sovereign territory and despite its military alliance with France.

In a famous speech, British Prime Minister Chamberlain hailed the conference as leading to "peace for our time" upon his return to the UK.

Was Britain and France appeasement reasonable?

According to some, appeasement was reasonable because Great Britain and France were in no shape to fight another war with Germany. The only other option was appeasement, which allowed Germany to take control of the Sudetenland. Some say that it encouraged Germany to demand even more, but to most officials in France and Great Britain, appeasement was the most reasonable solution.

How did the Allies appease Hitler?

The western countries that were France, Italy- Benito Mussolini and Britain- Neville Chamberlain were appeasing to Hitler because he wanted Sudetenland which was a part of Czechoslovakia because it was occupied by a majority of a population of Germans... also Britain, Italy and France thought that if they agree to his demands in return of a favor of not invading any other territory. They signed this appeasement without the knowledge of Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia was shocked but could not do anything as it was not that powerful to defeat France, Italy, Germany, Britain or any of them.

Why did France and Britain permit Germany to essentially take over most of Europe by 1940?

These two powers thought they could appease Germany by letting her have her demands. This pacifism/appeasement is known as the Munich Doctrine, named after the Munich Agreement, when Britain and France allowed Germany to annex parts of Europe. The allies let Germany grow in power, even though it violated the post-WWI treaties. Once powerful enough, Germany quickly took over Poland and France before there was any time to react.
