* you get instant access to the supply: only a 90 degree turn to open fully * less maintenance is required to the valve as you won't have to re-seat it disadvantage of a globe valve

* it is harder to finely adjust the flow of your substance compared to a gate valve: a gate valve requires many more turns to fully open and close than the single 90o "part-turn" required on a globe valve

when fully open protects its seals

most ball valves are 1/4 turn and are full way valves which means if its a 3/4" valve then the whole valve open full will not be under 3/4" diameter

almost all ball valves are more expensive but seem to be way more stable for many years (it is the only valve I will install anywhere possible)

DISADVANTAGES=

needs more room with its longer handle for control swing unless its a cork stop or curb stop valve

designed mainly for fully open or fully closed applications

Most smaller ball valves are unrepairable but again most are not likely needing repaired

The ball valve is a lousy regulator. It's basically a go, no-go device, and it's used most often in applications where it's either open or closed. It is not as good at regulating flow as, say, a gate valve is. Your garden hose won't have a ball valve to let you turn it off and on. The hose spigot or hose bib will use another valve type, and usually a globe valve. Those other valves usually have a little less resistance than the ball valve when the valves are wide open. The ball valve is very reliable. It will resist leaking over many years, and generally a lot better than, say, a gate valve. It can be engineered to withstand extreme pressure, and the highest pressure systems often have a ball valve in them to turn them on or shut them off. It takes a quarter turn to open or close them fully, and this lends them well to operation by an actuator. The ball valve can have a body with a number of ports in it, and this can allow you to "connect A to C" or to "connect B to C" with that quarter turn. Several porting combinations are possible. And you just gotta love the fact that if you align the handle of the valve with the hole in the ball, when the handle points "along" the conduit or pipe, the valve is open. When that handle is "across" that pipe, the valve is shut and flow is cut off. That's a powerful indicator to instantly tell you whether the valve is open or closed.

A gate valve provides a positive shut off, it is also called a stop valve, it cannot throttle flows. A globe valve is used to throttle flows, it does not provide a positive shut off. A butterfly valve may or may not be able to provide a positive shut off, and it can throttle flows. Reliability of butterfly valves is much lower than the reliability of the other two, they tend to leak by more readily.

ALWAYS USE BALL VALVE. Gate valve will leak. meaning it will let some water

come through valve after time if not a lot. They just don't hold up after time.
