  • To be classified as a mineral they must be naturally occurring
  • They must be a solid
  • They must be crystalline (have an orderly geometric spatial arrangement of atoms)
  • Minerals can me elemental (i.e. formed of one single element only - for example gold, coper or sulphur).
  • Minerals may also be a mixture of a range of differing chemical elements (e.g.Feldspar which can be potassium, sodium or calcium aluminium silicates.
  • The largest group of minerals are the silicates. These are the common rock forming minerals.
  • Another common rock forming mineral class is the carbonates - Calcite, aragonite - both CaCO3 and dolomite CaMg(CO3)2 (forming limestones and dolostones).
