Newton's first law states that an object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. An example would be pool. All of the balls on the table remain at rest until they are struck by the cue ball, and then they travel in a straight line until they impact something else.

Newton's first law of motion - Inertia, is the tendancy of an object to remain at rest or with a constant velocity until it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Examples include:

- Going around a bend in a vehicle - your body is experiencing a relatively constant velocity and "wants" to stay that way. The door of the car or the fricion of your bottom on the seat provides the unbalanced force to push you around the bend with the vehicle.

- A train coming into the station - again, your body is within an almost perfect inertial frame of reference. As the train slows down, your body is held on the seat by friction of your feet on the floor and bottom on the seat, as well as maybe your arms pressing on the seat in front of you - applying an equal but opposite force to keep you in your position.

I'm sure there are many more, but those are the two that I thought of and can explain well enough.

Newton's first law states that every object will remain in a straight line unless a change in state by the action of an external force. Force is equal to the change in momentum. For a constant mass the force much equal mass times acceleration. Formula of F = m x a. Examples of this is the motion of an airplane when the pilot changes the speed, or a model rocket being launched up into the atmosphere. There are others, such as a ball falling through the atmosphere, or a kite when the wind changes.
