Prior to the Tonkin Gulf incident (pre '64) tigers & elephants among other creatures were in country. After '64 the bombs and firepower in general drove most of them further and further away from Vietnam. Consequently, just about thru out the country was typically mosquitoes, snakes, rats, deer, and wild hogs. GIs used to hunt the deer, especially during Rome Plow operations in which the forest (jungle) was being bull dozed via a large circle. As the circle (forest) got smaller and smaller the animals would make a run for it...Venison on the hoof.

Rome plows commenced operation in 1969 and were a physical replacement for the chemical Agent Orange.
