99% of this answer is totally correct. However, Lincoln made poor choices overall on choosing generals. The top military general of the Union was appointed much too many times.

Based on the photo and the term "patriots" I believe this question is about the American Revolutionary War.Based on my first statement, one large advantage the American revolutionaries had were that they were fighting on their own familiar soil. They had no goal to "invade" Great Britain, but to only force the British to give up the war to stop the revolution.
