How was information collected prior to 1942 in the CIA?

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was established in 1947, not 1942. However, prior to its establishment, intelligence and information collection was primarily conducted by various government agencies and military branches, such as the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. These agencies relied on a combination of human intelligence gathering, covert operations, intercepted communications, and open-source intelligence to collect information.
