After the civil war the slaves had supposedly been freed but, they were not free in the since of what they could do. Even though they were said to be free they could be arrested for vagrancy. If a black was traveling and stopped in a town on their way they could be arrested and put back to work normally on another plantation. When blacks were first declared free they were seen as savages who would rape a white women at the slightest opportunity. After the southern states were readmitted to the union they put The Black Codes into effect. The Black Codes were new laws that placed taxes on free blacks who tried to pursue nonagricultural professions, restricted the abilities of blacks to rent land or own guns, and even allowed the children of supposedly "unfit" parents to be apprenticed to the old slave masters.

∙ 13y agoI am sure they were glad to be free. But the hard economic fact is that some were better off than others. That is because some of the owners were able to hire their workers; others did share-cropping and so on. There was also probably some lagtime involved before any changes were made in their lives until the Federal government was able to enforce the new situation.
Slaves were still slaves after the war ended. The Northern States which had slaves did not see their slaves freed until the December after the civil war ended. Many of the slaves were dumped from properties and left to starve after slavery ended. The transition period was extremely hard for many.
