Yes, it is a real sword. It's a Japanese sword called a 'souba'. I don't think it was ever actually forged as a real sword but I do remember an article talking about a document and a drawing. The idea of the double blade was to cause wound that couldn't be sewn causing death by bleeding.
In Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, Kadaj weilds a souba.
I'm sorry I can't find any concrete references.
They do sell replicas of it at most online weapon stores. Particularly those that deal with eastern style weaponry.
