In terms of property damage, Katrina was the worst hurricane in U.S. history. However it was nowhere near being the deadliest tropical cyclone (the generic term for hurricanes. Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people. The deadliest hurricane in the U.S. the Galveston hurricane of 1900 killed at least 6,000 people and possibly as many as 12,000.

The deadliest of all tropical cyclones, the Bhola cyclone of 1970 killed at least 300,000 people.

No. Hurricane Katrina was not even the worst hurricane in the United States. It was the costliest in terms of property damage, but nowhere near the deadliest. Hurricane Katrina killed about 1,800 people. The deadliest hurricane in U.S. history, which hit Galveston, Texas killed at least 6,000 people and possibly as many as 12,000. Hurricane Mitch hit Central America in 1998, killing nearly 20,000. Hurricanes in other parts of the world, which may be called cyclones or hurricanes depending on where they are, have been even worse. The deadliest on record was the Bhola Cyclone of 1970, which may have killed as many as 500,000 people.

I bet Katrina would not have been the worst hurricane in the universe. Even there could have been a worse hurricane in some of our unrecorded history. Also as we are talking of universe, we can't ignore hurricanes on other planets. Some hurricanes on Jupiter are said to be of the size of the moon, which is a lot more worse that what we have ever seen.
