During the early days of the ancient Roman civilization, Rome was positioned in the middle of the Italian peninsula. The close major civilizations of Carthage and the ancient Greek colonies in Southern Italy and Sicily were not a major threat. The Roman republic would not have a conflict with Carthage for several hundred more years. Powerful major eastern civilizations in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, such as the Parthians, were isolated from early Rome.
