Yes as petroleum id derived from oil and oil only forms in very specific geological requirements. E.g. the length of the carbon chains in the petroleum depends on what carbons and other compounds formed the oil.

Petroleum, or crude oil, is a naturally occurring flammable liquid that consists of complex chains and bonds of hydrocarbons with varying molecular weights. It also contains other organic compounds that are found in geologic formations beneath the earth's surface.
There are at least four common names for such mixtures: kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel, and petroleum ether. Since the common names are not pure chemical compounds and may contain some materials that are not alkanes, these common names preferably are not used in chemistry.

Just the l The answer above was very inaccurate. The majority of lotions are used for skin softening/moisturizing. Not all brands use this chemical, but petroleum is often involved. Petroleum goes under many names (Petroleum, Petrolatum, White Petrolatum, Mineral Oil, etc.) and can actually be very harmful. Petroleum clogs your pores and sends the chemical into your body, which can actually cause skin cancer and skin problems. My advice would be to avoid petroleum, so check the ingredients for the names listed above. That probably didn't answer your question. What I'm saying is that typically, petroleum is used as a moisturizing agent in lotions and creams but not always. Some products do not use petroleum, so I would recommend reaching out to those. Hope I helped, SFS
Petroleum is good, as it can be cracked and polymerised into other use full chemicals, it is bad because drilling from the ground is expensive.
