There's no denying that religious reasons were one of the primary causes for those conflicts, that they were battles between the two violently opposed ideologies of Christianity and Islam which (in the case of the Crusades) both seemed to want to dominate the Holy Land; however there were of course other reasons to go to war in both sitiuations here. The wars would have given the victors significant prestige which would have encouraged other countries to become more friendly to them, for example Spain's taking back of its land from the Muslims gave it a great amount of respect in Europe, improving trade relations, etc. Also, there was the matter of simply gaining more land and wealth that seems to accompany every war, the Christian Crusaders would gave been able to pillage vast amounts of treasures from the Holy Land, increasing the wealth of their homelands considerably.
