The Battle of Quebec in 1759, James Wolfe led this particular fight on the Plains of Abraham and beat the French who were under Marquis de Montcalm. Montreal fell in 1760.

Galveston sort of (arguably) invented the modern beauty contest. They began a competition at an event called Splash Day in 1920 which eventually became the international Pageant of Pulchritude event. Miss America started completely independently and, so far as I am aware, never had any direct connection although it would seem that it must have been inspired by Galveston's success.
