The cost of living in Roanoke is pretty average and most people say it is a great place to raise a family. Roanoke has its share of festivals each year that draws in many visitors to the area. Some of these are the Henry Street Festival, the Big Lick Blues Festival, a Chili Cook off Festival, and Festival in the Park. There are plenty of cultural and historical venues in Roanoke as well. Make sure you stop at the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Hopkins Planetarium. There is also Taubman Museum of Art, the History Museum of Western Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The Transportation Museum actually has some restored steam locomotives as well as items from the aviation field. It is definitely the right place to bring your family. Children love to see the historic modes of transportation that once were all we had. Dining out in Roanoke is easy to do. Being a large city it has all the popular fast food, chain restaurants, and specialty restaurants. Bars and pubs are scattered throughout the city as well.
