Most historians date the Middle Ages from 476 to 1453, or 476 to 1492, or round the dates to 500 to 1500, or do something like that.
Personally, I think 400 is a better beginning date, or even an earlier date, such as 313, when the edict of Milan was given, or 363 when the last pagan Roman Emperor died. The Roman Empire did not fall in 476, as nearly all of the Germanic kingdoms regarded themselves as part of it, and the crowing of Charlemagne as emperor in 800 is testimony to the fact that people still believed it was in some way alive and important at that time.
1400 is not what I would call a good ending date. 1453 is the date of the fall of Constantinople. 1492 is the date of the fall of the Emirate of Grenada and the discovery of the New World. Either of these dates seems to work well, and rounding to 1500 makes sense.
