I believe you may be talking about Donnie Darko...with the psycho bunny Frank. In the movie he isn't dead until he uses the storm to go back in time to save the life of the girl he loved. You see he wasn't in his bed when the plane crashed into his house the first time, this triggering the events that happened. Without having to explain the entire movie in short when the time comes for the storm he goes back in time placing himself in the bed knowing that he was going to die. In him dying it set a new path of events to follow. That's why they played the song mad world, "i think it's kind of funny or maybe even sad the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I ever had." There is actually a new movie out called S Darko which picks up with his little sister the one who was with the mom in the first one you are speaking of. It helps explain the time travelling a little more. If you need more let me know. Again I was trying to keep as brief as possible.
