Over 40,000 men flew helicopters during the Viet War. That's all services, but only counts the United States. That doesn't count the enemy (they had them, they sunk US Navy Swift Boat #19 (PCF-19) with one), doesn't count the allies (Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, South Vietnam, etc.); and it doesn't count the helicopter crewmen (door gunners, etc.). Contact the Vietnam War Helicopter Associations, they might be able to help...but they might only have what most associations have; lists of the dead, wounded, or decorated.
There were thousands upon thousands of US pilots and aircrewmen flying missions during the Vietnam War. As there were during WW2 & the Korean War. The most common method of listing Airmen's names for fighting in those wars, and are normally listed in history books, is when they've either been shot down or shot down enemy airplanes. The most comprehensive book will probably be: "Vietnam Air Losses: USAF, Navy, and Marine Corps Fixed-Wing Aircraft Losses in Southeast Asia 1961-1973." By Chris Hobson (2002). ISBN 1-85780-1156. Note-That Hobson's book does NOT contain US Army fixed-wing aircraft that flew combat missions in Vietnam: 0-1 Bird Dog and the Mohawk. Also note that Helicopters (Rotor-Wing Aircraft) will NOT be listed. Although not listing ALL US Airmen flying missions in Vietnam, these few extra titles might prove helpful: 1. "Journey Into Darkness", By Col Philip E. Smith & Peggy Herz (1992); the story of a USAF F-104 Starfighter pilot shot down during an engagement with a Red Chinese MIG-19 (J-6 version); while on a mission over the North Vietnamese coastline. 2. "...And Kill Migs"; a short collection of US MiG killers in Vietnam. 3. "F-8 Crusader Units of the Vietnam War." Osprey, Combat Aircraft #7; ISBN 1-85532-724-4. 4. "MiG-17 and MiG-19 Units of the Vietnam War." Osprey, Combat Aircraft #25; ISBN 1-84176-162-1. Although this is a book on enemy air units; some US Airmen & their aircraft are listed in the data section of the book.
No such list exists.
yes
all marines
All the US presidents that served before 1956 or after April 1975.
Less than a thousand men were freed, nearly all of whom were US pilots and aircrewmen.
All your awards should be listed on your DD214.
For US Soldiers probably not; and neither for US Marines, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen, and Airmen that served in country. That would be well over 2 million names. Most likely, the closest way to obtain a list would be to obain Shelby's book titled, "Vietnam Order of Battle." That book lists all US Army units in Vietnam, and possibly the USMC, USAF, USN, and USCG units in Vietnam. THEN each unit's "Association" on the website would have to be contacted to obtain the men's names that served in those units in Vietnam; THEN ADDED UP (compiled). This way, the list of 2 1/2 million names could be reduced to several thousand names in unit increments. 1. To date, one man (Shelby) has compliled all of the units that fought in Vietnam. 2. One man (Hobson) has compiled all of the fixed-wing (jets and airplanes-NOT HELICOPTERS) aircraft that were lost in Vietnam, nearly 3,000 of them; by type, serial number, date of loss, pilot's name, reason for loss (SAM-Missile, Anti-Aircraft Artillery, Cannon Fire, MIG-Air to Air Missile, Operational, etc.), and branch of service. 3. One man has compiled the names of all of the US Firebases and Warships that fought in Vietnam. 4. And the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall has compiled the names of all of the Vietnam War dead.
Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association (VHPA) maintains a list of all Army helicopter pilots trained by the US Army. Most served in RVN. Try contacting the webmaster at http://www.vhpa.org/. He may or may not answer individual questions, buy unlikely he will publish the list. There will be a list somewhere in the US military.
all marines
Approximately 293,000 USAF Airmen (counting officers) served in Vietnam. Over 5,000 US Aircrewmen were killed in the war, from all branches.
women served as combat pilots
All the US presidents that served before 1956 or after April 1975.
Only veteran's groups (VVA, AMVETS, VFW, American Legion), or the VA (Veterans Administration) might be able to answer that question. And be advised, your question does concern MILLIONS of men.
Paul Harkins, William Westmoreland, Creighton Abrams, all WW2 veterans.
Less than a thousand men were freed, nearly all of whom were US pilots and aircrewmen.
Note: Korean War ERA is different than Korean War; Vietnam ERA is different than Vietnam War. You will see figures stating that 6 million (or more) US Military personnel served in Korea and 7 million men (or more) served in Vietnam; those figures are for the "Era" (the time period), not the actual war! 1. Less than 1 million US military servicemen fought in the Korean War. 2. 2,594,000 US military servicemen fought in the Vietnam War (served in country). 3,403,100 US servicemen served in South Vietnam and SEA (Southeast Asia; Thailand, etc.) total. 3. US forces served in all Persian Gulf conflicts after Vietnam, and suffered casualties in all of them; which one are you referring to?: A. Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988 B. Operation Desert Storm Jan/Feb 1991 C. Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003
