What is BT toxin?

BT Toxin, Bacillus thuringensis, is a bacterium commonly used as a biological pesticide. It produces toxic chemicals and can be harmful to mammalian blood by damaging red blood cells and more.

Why do the crystals of Bt toxin produced by some bacteria do not kill the bacteria themselves?

toxin is inactive: In bacteria, the toxin is present in an inactive form, called prototoxin, which gets converted into active form when it enters the body of an insect

What does the medical abbreviation BT mean?

Bowel Tones or botulinum toxin.

How could biotechnology lead to a decrease in the use of pesticides?

Use of genetically modified crops helps us to minimize the use of fertilizers and chemicals so that their harmful effects on environment can be reduced. For example- Bt cotton is produced by a bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt for short). Bt toxin gene has been cloned from the bacteria and been expressed in plants to produced resistance to insects without the need for insecticides; in effect created a bio-pesticide. Examples are Bt cotton, Bt rice, tomato, potato, soybean.corn etc.

While Botulinum toxin blocks the release of acetylcholine the tetanoid toxin actually blocks the release of GABA. How would the effects of tetanoid toxin exposure be different from the results of BT?

The blocking of GABA release will cause convulsions, where as the blocking of acetylcholine will cause paralysis.

What is a disadvantage of GM organisms to health?

Disadvantages of GM Organisms to HealthShort and long term disadvantages of GM organisms to human health are not yet known. The very nature of GM crops could be a key to the extent of disadvantages to human health that are seen in the future. One type of GM corn produces what is called BT Toxin, which is a pesticide. Since the toxin is produced by the plant itself, it is probably safe to assume that the toxin is still present when the corn is eaten, making it harmful to the health of the consumer. In the United States, no labeling is required for foods that contain GMOs and at least one study of consumption of GMO foods by rodents resulted in organ failure and death.

Why are scientists concerned about the use of the bt toxin which is used to kill insects in genetic engineering?

Many scientists aren't concerned about the use of Bt toxins. Consumers, some scientists, some medical care professionals, and others are usually the ones who are concerned about Bt crops used to feed animals and humans. To understand why, you need to understand that Bt crops are genetically modified to produce the toxin that kills insects in every cell of the plant itself. Essentially, the plant itself becomes an insecticide. Though it is claimed that science shows those plants have no effect on animals or humans, many believe that real life anecdotal evidence shows eating Bt foods may have unintended harmful effects on the intestinal flora and digestive system. Those who believe that also believe that research needs to be conducted to find out if Bt is causing harm to health, and many try to avoid eating GMO foods.

What is the relationship between European corn borer and bt corn?

The corn produces a toxin which poisons the corn borer after it consumes some of the corn.

Are any food companies using Bt corn currently?

Indirectly. Some of the large meat-production corporations are feeding Bt corn to their livestock, which are then processed into meat products for human consumption. Although it's approved for human consumption, I'm unaware of any company using Bt corn directly in a human food product.

What does BT-40 stand for in cnc?

What does ''bt'' stands in bt brinjal or bt cotton?

Bt stands for bacillus thuringiensis, a common soil bacterium toxic to lepidopteran insects. When "Bt" is placed before a plant name, such as in "Bt Brinjal" (the brinjal is known in the US as eggplant), it means the plant has been genetically modified to produce a protein toxic to certain insects in the same way the bacteria does. The protein has not been shown to be harmful to humans but is controversial in other contexts.
