The rare lake that forms in a volcanic crater requires a high level of precipitation, to offset the loss of water to evaporation. At Crater Lake, the annual snowfall is very high, and many times will not entirely melt off during the summer. The temperature is not cold enough to freeze the entire mass of water (some 4.5 cubic miles), as is seen with small glaciers inside high volcanoes such as Mount St. Helens. Small volcanic vents have occasionally released lava from the lakebed more than 1000 feet underwater. The island features Wizard Island, Merriam Cone, and Phantom Ship are all remnants of minor eruptions since the main crater was formed.
