It doesn't particularly matter.

Most metals are polycrystaline (so there are small areas which are well ordered so for example ///////|\\\\\\\|//////|\\\\\\\|////// wherein large sections all point one way, but not all sections point the same way.), the sections, called domains when referring to magnetism, each have a magnetic spin, or 'Direction'.

Now normally these spins cancel each other out, meaning most metals aren't magnetised. Metals, however can have there spins aligned, so they appear like so //////|//////|/////| making them overall magnetic. ALL metals can be magnetised, just some can have it done permanently, as their domains line up permanently. If magneto can line up the domains in the adamantium (which he can...) then he can manipulate the metal.

It is magnetic as we see in the first x-men movie magneto has power over wolveine
