Both languages in France and in England existed in their own right for as long as you care to go back in time. They were both heavily influenced as a result of successive invasions and trade, religious, artistic and scientific relations from the south. Because Britain was at the end of this chain its language is a mixture of its own original language and the addition of many words from languages that were first used in other languages going all the way to northern Africa. Conclusion: English and French people spoke their own distinct languages originally, however, because of the uptake of parts of different languages to the south, the French often spoke what became English words before the English did. When looking at all of this keep in mind that often the dialect of the same language, spoken in any place you went to that was just 50 miles away, was hard to understand.

French is considered to have evolved from Latin, which makes it an older language compared to English. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, which influenced the development of French. English, on the other hand, is a Germanic language that has been heavily influenced by French and other languages over time.
