either mars or moon. i think its mars, because Indra is son of dyayus pita (usually translatted as sky) and prithvi (earth). we know mars was born of the earth from puranic sloka (dharani garbha sambhootam, vidyut kanti....), so Indra must mean mars. Rg Veda also praises Indra to have drunk soma often and it gave him strength to do good things for earth - bring water to earth and make sun rise & set everyday. Soma is another name-call for Moon, and using thunder to destroy a dark canopy and release the ice due to heat as water which fell to earth sounds more like a primitive planetesimal (mars) interacting with a infant earth, close in orbit with modern day moon (& accordingly drinking soma) and giving the earth a push from wherever it was previously into an orbit around sun (hence making sun rise & set everyday). there are more evidences in rg veda, for later - dwastha@Yahoo.com
