The enter key has an analogous function to the return lever on a typewriter.

There should be a margin-set lever that can be slid further in or out to alter the travel of the carriage. The margin-set lever is often located next to the larger carriage release lever.
Open the cover, push the red lever on the right hand side of the ribbon towards the front of the typewriter, and lift the old ribbon off, replace with new ribbon, pull the lever back towards the keyboard and close the lid.
A lever that is third in line waiting to be lifted!
