Japan, never previously defeated in a war, may have had illusions, but Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto did not. He had lived in the US and seen the might of US industry. He knew that time was not on Japan's side, and if the US was to be defeated, it must be defeated quickly. After the war, the US emerged as the supreme world power, and the questioner is probably asking from this arrogant standpoint which has brought down mightier empires that the US ever thought about being.
