it depends i would say down because if you go up you turn the heat up.
Most air conditioners as single speed. It's on or off. A residential A/C will usually provide a 15 degree temperature drop. 85 degree air returning will be 70 degree air out the register. The only way to get colder air out, would to be to put colder air in. By leaving the system on, the air in your house will be lowered to the thermostat setting. If you have it set to 75 degrees, you can expect 60 degree air out the registers.
