If ur at fault for a minor accident with min.damage I offer repeatedly to pay for it but the other person says no its ok. 5 months later he wants money. Nothing was reported. Am I still liable?

So the story is we were going to McDoanlds me, him (the other vehicle owner) and 2 of my girl friends. I was backing out of a drive way and his car was behind mine, my back window was frosted so I couldn't see out if very well. (My fault!) So i just rolled back and heard a little thunk. So we got out and their was a small dent on his car and nothing on mine. He didn't seem to care at the time, although I was all worked up and offered about 1000 times to pay for any damages. But he insisted it was ok and he had bigger problems to worry about in life other then a little dent. (Which all my friends heard.) So we've talekd since then and have hung out a couple times and then now 5 months later he calls me up and says he wants 1050 cash. So know that its my fault I ask him to get an estimate done at the autoshop I like and he says he doesnt trust anyone working on his vehicle and just wants me to pay the work him and his friend would do. So all my friends and family say that he's trying to take advantage of me and I shouldn't even have to pay since at the time he said to not worry about it. No reports were filed to the police or insurance company. Can I still be sued? Am I still liable?
