I have a 1997 GMC with a 305 vortec v8 the motor revs at 2000 - 2500 hot or cold i have changed the plugs plug wires and checked all the sensors do you think it could be the dome gasket?

An air leak at the head can cause reving at idle. When you changed the spark plugs what did the old ones look like A light gray or white color would indicate a lean condition. This could be a head gasket or a leak in the intake between the injection system and the intake valve.

Will a motor out of a 92 Chevy 1500 work in a 96 Chevy 2500 Both are 5.7 one is throttle body one is VORTEC?
No it will not. The 96 vortec has a crankshaft sensor and alot of other sensors on the engine that is required so the transmission will work that will not interchange with the 92 engine. Even the fuel pump would have to be changed. You must put a VORTEC engine back in the 96 so everything will work correctly.

If you are sure that it did not freeze and crack the block, Then the intake manifold gasket is leaking. That is a common problem with the vortec Chevy engines. You need to replace the gasket with a factory Chevy gasket from the dealer.

Yes. White smoke is an indication of a coolant leak which could be caused by an intake gasket

Cap, rotor, wires and plugs, and if they've never been changed, probably the Oxygen sensors as well. Check the EGR valve, make sure it's opening properly and hasn't caked over with deposits. Get a new gasket before you remove the EGR valve. A PCV valve would probably be a good idea. Of course, make sure all of the filters are in okay.

You put a 350 vortec out of a Tahoe in your 91 silverado and made it carb but it keeps dying why?
Because a true 350 vortec I think relies on the vortec intake in order for the pressure to stay correct. I just remember i had my vortec box off of my truck one time I started it and It died just put the old vortec air intake back on and it should be fine. sounds like you have vacumn leaks around the intake manifold, this can be checked with a can of carb spray,
