I don't believe they were necessarily punished. The bombings that ended the war for Japan was pretty much it. Then the United States proceeded to reconstruct, a common thing for the victors to do after a war.

Japan was punished for their role in World War II by paying million dollars to the Allies (British Empire, France, Netherlands, United States, China, and Soviet Union.) Also, the Allies had to prosecute the Japanese government and military leaders for war crimes like sneak attack on Pearl Harbor and illegal torture and mistreatment of Allied P.O.W.
